What is iChing

iChing uses the concept of energy surrounding a given situation by utilizing the principles of another Chinese classic text called the Tao Te Ching, which was written by the famous Chinese Taoist philosopher- Lao Tzu.

iChing is one of the oldest divination technique in the world. It originated from ancient China and is based on the iChing book, also called as The Book of Changes. This book is believed to have been written by Chinese Emperor Fu Hsi (2953-2838 B.C.) and was later edited by several folks to give us this current version as we have of this ancient text. Some people believe that iChing directly resulted from the Tao Te Ching and give much credit to Lao Tzu for it's concept. iChing also utilizes the concept of elemental energies- their compatibility or dis-compatibility giving rise to indications for a given situation.

An iChing hexagram which is explained below, is made from three tri-grams. Each tri-gram (i.e. set of three lines) is a representation of the elemental energy. The eight possible tri-grams are:
  • Heaven
  • Thunder
  • Water
  • Mountain
  • Earth
  • Wind
  • Fire
  • Lake
One tri-gram is placed over the other to give a hexagram which is then interpreted using the details for each Hexagram. In addition, if a hexagram has changing lines then each of those changing lines also need to be interpreted as well as the future hexagram needs to be considered to provide complete reading details.

How is an iChing reading obtained

An iChing reading is obtained by throwing three coins (or six yard sticks) and then noting down how the coins fall. Depending on the way these coins fall, it can either give a Yang i.e. male line or a Yin i.e. female line. A yang line is drawn solid and a yin line is drawn broken. The coins or sticks are thrown six times and each time the yang or yin line is noted and drawn from base up. I.e. the first line is drawn at the bottom, followed by line 2 above it and so on. After six such tosses, one would have a diagram with six lines, which is called a hexagram.
In addition to the lines being male or female, they can also be regular or changing. If the hexagram has even one changing line then another hexagram is drawn which incorporates the change suggested by the changing line. Changing lines are usually depicted by drawing a dot in the center of the line.

This second hexagram is drawn which indicates the changed lines. While drawing it, if the male, solid line has a dot in the center, then it is drawn as a female, broken line and vice versa. If the line in the hexagram was not changed then it is drawn the same. At the end of this exercise, one gets a second hexagram which shows the changed lines. Depending on how these lines are arranged, it would be one of the following 64 hexagrams.

The first hexagram shows the immediate energy surrounding a situation. If this situation is fairly stable, then no changing lines are expected. But in case, the situation is evolving, then one would expect changing lines and this second hexagram is called the "future hexagram" and indicates energy surrounding this possible outcome.

Noting which line is changing provides further information and details towards the situation's evolution from the near term situation (first hexagram) to the future hexagram which provides a more longer term indication.
